I love food.
Eating food.
Cooking food.
Baking food.
Smelling food as I walk through the hallway of my apartment building, wondering what the neighbors are having for dinner.
Reading about food in every publication from Bon Appetit to NYT Cooking.
Watching food videos and second-hand Tik Toks on Reels.
Lurking on all my favorite food influencers accounts and stories to see their latest new creation.
Waiting in line for food that me and everyone else in NYC has just heard about and absolutely has to have.
All the verbs.
My favorite verb: savoring food – it speaks to a deep appreciation that extends beyond the instant gratification/dopamine hit that you get when you bite into a warm breakfast burrito or homemade cookie. If you savor, you are thinking about each flavor and texture that emerges, the culmination of multi-ingredient interplay. You are thinking about the people that made the food. And not just those involved in the immediate preparation, but the generations of people that it took for that bite to reach you. To savor your food is to meditate on your food.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the word “savor” is a mere ‘y’ away from savory. Food that is savory is complex and demands time for the flavors to develop on your tongue. Savory food lingers… the taste on your tongue, the aromas in your apartment. Savory food fills you up.
I’ll take savory over sweet 9 times out of 10. I am a notorious over-salter and will likely suffer from hypertension at some point in my life as a result (rip). But I can’t help but be drawn to the versatility of savory flavors. Salt, spice, umami – these ingredients lend depth and complexity to an otherwise bland or one-note dish. Savory doesn’t overshadow, it highlights and creates contrast. Savory makes other flavors a better version of themselves.
Which brings me to why I’m here. We all want to be the best, most vibrant version of ourselves. We want to thrive. We want our cups to runneth over so that we may fill the cups of those around us.
I feel my best when I am creating. I thrive when I come out on the other side of a challenge with something to be proud of. And there is no greater joy for me than sharing what I have with those I love.
So I created a place to do those things.
This is a place for savoring. It’s a chance for me to slow down and think, to take an otherwise transient experience and capture it for posterity.
This is a place for savory. It’s for mixing and matching and seeing what works (and what definitely doesn’t). It’s for learning and experimenting and sharing the results.
So join me in savoring the savory. There isn’t exactly a destination in sight, but that’s okay because the best part is the journey.
